Loft Construction in the UK
In the UK, a loft traditionally refers to the space just below the roof of a house or building. This area was often used for storage, but over the past few decades it has become one of the most popular ways to add extra living space without moving home. Loft construction (or loft conversion) is now a major part of the UK building and renovation industry.
Types of Loft Construction / Conversions in the UK
- Roof light / Velux Conversion
- The simplest form. Uses existing roof space with minimal changes.
- Adds skylights (Velux windows), insulation, flooring and stairs.
- Dormer Loft Conversion
- Extends the roof vertically to create more headroom and floor space.
- Most common in terraced and semi-detached houses.
- Hip-to-Gable Conversion
- Changes a hipped roof to a straight gable end to increase interior space.
- Common in end-of-terrace or detached houses.
- Mansard Conversion
- A more complex construction involving rebuilding one side of the roof to create a nearly vertical slope.
- Maximizes internal space and can turn an entire floor into usable rooms.
